Up Close & Peculiar
More than 100 years ago, the globetrotting Robert Ripley began collecting artifacts from his journeys around the world, which today form the heart of the greatest collection of oddities ever assembled. Up Close & Peculiar brings the curious history of these pieces to a personal level as our very own, Allyson Iovino, explores the strange relics that lie within our Warehouse walls! Become a part of the story as we share pieces for every history buff, pop culture junkie, and oddities collector alike.
Today: Michael Jackson Memorabilia
On what would've been his 66th birthday, let's take a closer look at some possessions of the King of Pop.
Breaking Records
At the time, the Thriller video was the most expensive music video of all time and cost a cool half a million dollars to make. Jackson still holds the record for the most expensive music video of all time with his song "Scream," which cost seven million dollars to make!
The record-breaking doesn't stop there! In 2009, over thirteen thousand people in Mexico City broke the record for the largest number of people doing the Thriller dance.
Keys to the Castle
Jackson had quite the key collection! Besides the keys to Hollywood that are currently in Ripley's Hollywood , Jackson also received the keys to Las Vegas and to his hometown in Indiana.
He received the key to Hollywood in acknowledgment of all his record-breaking feats, including getting the most Grammys in one year, having the highest annual earnings ever for a pop star, having the most expensive music video, and the longest music video.
