Milan is known for high fashion, fine art, and world-class espresso. But tucked among the city's busy streets is a sight that's far more bone-chilling.

Step inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, and you'll find walls covered from floor to ceiling in human bones and skulls. Believe It or Not!, the church is thought to hold the remains of up to 3,000 people!

A Solution for Crowded Cemeteries

The chapel's history stretches back to the early 1200s, when it was built as an ossuary, a building used to store bones when a cemetery runs out of space. As local burial grounds filled up, older remains were moved inside to make room for new burials.

From Storage to Showpiece

Several hundred years later, those stored remains took on a whole new purpose. Instead of keeping them tucked away, the bones were used to decorate the church itself, earning it the nickname "The Bone Chapel."

Patterns Made of People

The result is as beautiful as it is eerie. Bones and skulls line the walls in intricate, awe-inspiring patterns, and multiple cross designs took hundreds of skulls to complete. Every surface invites a closer look... if you dare.
